How do you see vulnerability: strength or weakness? The view on being vulnerable has been taking a bit of a turn lately, from what I’ve seen.

Where it used to be commonplace to “suck it up” or not overshare, we are realizing the impact of those decisions.

While I admittedly have a sign that says “suck it up, buttercup” on my bookshelf, I try to convey the importance of voicing your opinion and feelings in this house. Consequences are part of the “suck it up” portion in my eyes.

Vulnerability is simply defined as susceptible to physical harm or damage, emotional injury, attack; open to censure or criticism, according to thefreedictionary.com.

So, while weakness tends to be a synonym, I don’t believe it’s a weakness of character so much as a weakness like Kryptonite is to Superman.

We are trusting others with information and sharing a piece of ourselves in a way that is saying proceed with caution, this is me baring my soul.

It’s nice to remind ourselves that everyone is human, and it’s not an easy task to lay it all out there for the world to see. Take that trust, and while you certainly may provide feedback, critique, and even disapproval, be mindful of how we respond to it.

To the point, vulnerability can absolutely be a strength as it takes a lot of courage and bravery to choose to peel back the layers and let others in.
