Why You Need to Build Your Mompreneur Village (and How to Do It Step by Step)
We’re all told you need a village, but let me share WHY you need to build your mompreneur village (and how to do it step by step)
Motherhood (especially while building, maintaining, and growing a business) is beautiful, messy, and challenging — and navigating it alone can feel overwhelming. That’s why having a village—a network of trusted, supportive people—isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s essential.
One of the most powerful tools I’ve leaned on in motherhood and business ownership is building a village. If you’re wondering how to build your own, here’s a simple yet powerful method using the acronym OPEN:
O – Options: Start With Openness
Be open to meeting people in unexpected places.
Think about all the casual spaces you frequent: your child’s dance class, baseball practice, storytime at the library, even the grocery store. These are all opportunities to meet someone who might become a foundational brick in your village.
Strike up a conversation with one new person this week. Look for common ground and see if there’s potential to build a connection.
P – Patience: It Won’t Happen Overnight
Real relationships take time.
In today’s world of instant gratification, it’s easy to feel frustrated when deep friendships don’t form quickly. But building your village is like building a house — brick by brick, conversation by conversation.
Commit to showing up consistently in one place — a playgroup, a class, or even an online community — for a month and engage with others each time.
E – Effort: Invest in the Right People
Be intentional about who you allow into your village.
Choose those who lift you up, not tear you down. And don’t be afraid to say goodbye to relationships that no longer serve your growth or your family’s wellbeing.
Evaluate your current village. Are there relationships that drain you? If so, make a plan to either set boundaries or distance yourself respectfully.
N – Neighborhood Watch: Maintain and Refresh
Your village will evolve — and that’s okay.
As you and your children grow, so will your needs. Some people will cycle out of your life, and others will come in. The key is to stay mindful and allow your village to evolve with you.
Check in with your “Neighborhood Watch” — those people you trust (like your mom or sister) who can offer insight. Ask them for honest feedback about your current circle.
Bonus: What If a Friend’s Child Is a Bad Influence? Or you have a toxic client?
Sometimes, it’s not the parent who’s the problem—it’s their child. If another child constantly breaks your house rules, talk with their parent about what you’re noticing. And if your parenting styles are too different to reconcile, it’s okay to limit the time your children spend together.
This scenario can fit business, too. Sometimes a client is too much trouble. If they constantly shatter your boundaries, talk with them first. If it continues to happen, it’s okay to say, “Sorry, this is no longer working for me.”
Set clear expectations for playdates (or working together – contracts are a must) and communicate them kindly with other parents/clients. Your home/business, your rules.
Final Thought: You Deserve a Village That Builds You Up
