Summer is Here: Break Out of the Mundane with These Fun & Affordable Family Activities

When summer rolls around—especially after months of chaos, stress, or pandemic fatigue—it’s easy to feel stuck in the same routine.

But the sunshine and longer days offer a perfect opportunity to shake things up and create magical, memory-filled moments with your kids. Even better?

You don’t need to spend a lot (or anything at all!) to do it.

Here are 10 simple, affordable, and memory-making ideas to help you break free from the mundane this summer—with actionable tips for each!

🌊 1. Water Play That Goes Beyond the Pool

  • No water table? No problem. Use a plastic bin, bucket, or even Tupperware.
  • Add waterproof toys or make it sensory by adding sponges and cups.
  • Let your kids “paint” the driveway with wet hands or feet and watch the prints vanish like magic.
  • Freeze food coloring in ice cube trays for colorful water play or icy painting fun.

🎨 2. Take the Painting Outside

  • Tape up paper to the porch, fence, or side of the house and let kids splatter or finger paint.
  • Collect leaves, twigs, and rocks for natural “paint brushes” or stamps.
  • Paint found rocks with bright colors and display them in the yard or give them as gifts.

🎳 3. DIY Backyard Bowling

  • Use household items like blocks or paper towel rolls for pins.
  • Roll socks into balls or use a small rubber one from the toy bin.
  • Encourage kids to keep score for a little math practice!

🧗 4. Create an Obstacle Course

  • Jump over pillows, crawl under chairs, zigzag through sticks or cones.
  • Use chalk to create an obstacle path on the sidewalk—spin, hop, stomp!
  • Let kids help design it to spark creativity and buy-in.

🌈 5. Chalk It Up!

  • Mix cornstarch, water, and food coloring for DIY chalk paint (remember: it should be soupy).
  • Draw outlines of your kids and let them “decorate themselves.”
  • Make stained glass art with painter’s tape and colorful chalk in blocks.

🕵️ 6. Go on a Neighborhood Adventure

  • Collect interesting rocks, flowers, and leaves.
  • Snap photos of bugs or birds and identify them later with an app or guidebook.
  • Turn it into a scavenger hunt using a printable list.

🍦 7. Ice Cube Fun

  • Make fun-shaped ice cubes with molds (think: stars, turtles, or smiley faces).
  • Drop them into a water bin or kiddie pool for added sensory fun.
  • Freeze small toys or items in ice and have a “rescue mission.”

🧼 8. Tape Art & Reveal Magic

  • Create art with painter’s tape designs—geometric shapes, names, or hearts.
  • Paint over it with chalk paint or washable paint.
  • Let the kids peel off the tape for the final magical reveal.

🌿 9. Nature Hunt + Research

  • Collect flowers, leaves, and rocks.
  • Once home, look them up together to learn names and facts.
  • Create a “nature log” scrapbook with drawings and findings.

🎁 10. Printables and Planners to Keep the Fun Flowing

Summer doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be memorable.

With a little creativity and a lot of heart, you can make magic in your backyard, on your porch, or even just with a bin of water.

I LOVE summer.

All of my babies are home with me, the activities and hustle slows down, and the slower pace just makes for a less stressed, happier mama. June seems to be flying by, though, and I took the first few weeks enjoying being able to sleep in, take care of the new baby, getting tasks around the inside and outside of the house in order, and enjoying the end of dance and baseball. In the words of Hanson, “won’t you save me ‘cause saving’s what I need…”

This has been the longest week I’ve had in a long time. Long and busy from sun up until sun down with the kiddos, client work, and just life. I needed a little saving throughout the last five days. I’d say I’ll spare you the details, but it helps put my words into perspective. And if it weren’t for my beloved planner, I probably would have forgotten an item or two. If you’re on the lookout, these are the kinds I get each year.  (more…)
