As a mom of three (a 14-year-old, 10-year-old, and a wild 6-year-old), this topic is one of my favorites: Making Memories Through the Madness.
Motherhood is full of chaos, whether it’s handling daily life or managing during extraordinary times like a pandemic. There are always ups and downs, and no matter how prepared we feel, life throws us curveballs.
One morning, I was having a “boss” moment, feeling on top of things, when my youngest took a tumble down our four garage steps. She was okay, thank goodness, but it reminded me that in motherhood, just when you think you’re in control, life has other plans!
Despite the chaos, what truly matters are the memories we create with our children.
These moments—big or small—are what they’ll remember as they grow up. The quote by Channing Tatum perfectly sums it up: “I don’t know what you’re going through life doing if you’re not really trying to collect some really great memories.” Memories are more than events—they evoke emotions, tastes, smells, and feelings. Good or bad, they shape how we view the world and how our children will, too.
Finding the Silver Lining in Everyday Chaos
Parenthood never stops. Whether it’s the sleep deprivation of a newborn or the constant needs of a toddler, you’re always on even when you have business tasks to complete. But in the midst of it all, we have the opportunity to create those precious memories that our children will hold on to. The late-night snuggles, the bedtime stories, the unexpected trips to the park—these are the moments that matter. Sure, there are sleepless nights and tantrums, but there are also the giggles, the milestones, and the “I love you”s that make it all worth it.
Building positive memories doesn’t mean we need to plan extravagant activities. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that stay with us. My kids and I have done Mother’s Day art projects where we made watercolor bookmarks and cards for the grandmas. It wasn’t fancy, but we spent time together creating, and they were so proud to give their handmade gifts (we have done handmade gifts many times over the years).
We’ve also been working on a garden, pulling weeds and preparing for planting. Even small tasks like these help create memories—things that might seem insignificant now, but could turn into cherished recollections as they grow older.
Creating Positive Memories Amidst Challenges
Of course, not all memories are joyful. Life brings its share of hardships, but even then, we can work to find those silver linings. Years ago, when I asked my son what memories stood out to him during this challenging time, he struggled to remember specifics, but I know these moments will stick with him as he grows. And that’s okay. Sometimes the memories come later when we reflect on what we went through.
Our memories shape who we are. The experiences and emotions from our childhood inform the decisions we make as adults. That’s why it’s so important to be intentional about creating positive experiences for our kids. We want them to look back and feel loved, supported, and secure, even in difficult times.
I try to make sure that every day, no matter how crazy, ends on a positive note. Whether it’s acknowledging something my children did well or offering comfort after a tough day, I want them to know that they’re loved and tomorrow is a new chance to do better. My daughter, especially, needs this reassurance at the end of the day. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and if she’s had a tough day, she’ll vent before bed. I let her get it all out, reassure her, and remind her that she is important, and loved, and tomorrow is a new day.
What Memories Are You Creating?
So, what kind of memories are you building with your children during this time? We’ve been making art, playing outside (trampoline!), baking or cooking together, and getting creative with indoor activities like our new Otrio game and multi-game table. What about you? Have you been baking together, doing puzzles, or just finding ways to stay connected? Share your stories below—I’d love to hear them.
If you’re looking for new ways to create positive memories or need help turning around a difficult situation, I’m here to chat. Even though times are tough, let’s focus on filling our kids’ memory banks with moments of love, joy, and togetherness. These are the memories they’ll carry with them forever.
Final Thoughts
Motherhood (especially when running or growing a business) may be messy, chaotic, and sometimes overwhelming, but it’s also filled with moments of magic if we choose to see them. At the end of the day, the question isn’t whether we’ll make memories—it’s what kind of memories we’ll make. Let’s aim to create ones full of love, laughter, and a little bit of madness.
Until next time, keep making those memories!
