Prioritizing Your Pursuits: A Guide for Busy Moms and Entrepreneurs
My passion has always been helping others, so it’s time to talk about something that’s close to my heart: prioritizing your pursuits: a guide for busy moms and entrepreneurs.
I love a good alliteration, and I’m all about making things fun and memorable. Before diving in, I like to start with a quote that sets the tone:
“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
—Stephen Covey
This quote is so relevant, especially when we talk about finding harmony in our goals, dreams, and daily tasks.
Why Prioritizing Your Pursuits Matters
We often hear about the importance of planners, checklists, and schedules. While these tools are valuable, many people struggle with them because they focus on the wrong things. Covey’s quote reminds us that instead of merely filling our schedules with tasks, we should focus on scheduling what truly matters—our priorities.
Here are my tips for managing your time, energy, and business without feeling overwhelmed:
- Make a List of Your To-Dos
Start by listing everything you need to do—daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Whether it’s getting the kids ready for school, planning meals, or business-related tasks, write it all down. This helps you visualize what needs to be done and ensures nothing slips through the cracks.
- Organize Into Needs and Wants
Once you have your list, categorize tasks into needs and wants. When planning your week, note what absolutely must be done and what would be nice to get done if time allows. This approach gives you a buffer, making it easier to adjust when unexpected events occur.
- Create Space for Creativity
Is there space in your schedule to create? This could mean setting aside time for business development or simply taking time to rest and rejuvenate. It’s important to replenish your energy so you can tackle your tasks effectively. Think of your energy like a sponge—it needs to be refilled regularly to stay effective.
- Identify Tasks That Zap Your Energy
Take a look at your list and identify tasks that drain your energy. These are the things you don’t enjoy or that aren’t the best use of your time. Recognizing these tasks is the first step toward delegating them.
- Delegate to Better Prioritize
Finally, start delegating tasks to free up your time and energy for what really matters. The first thing I delegated in my business was house cleaning, which made a world of difference. It allowed me to focus on growing my business and spending quality time with my kids. As your business grows, consider delegating more tasks, whether it’s accounting, writing, or client management, so you can continue to prioritize what’s important to you.
Wrapping Up
Remember, the key isn’t just to fill your schedule but to fill it with your priorities. Let’s recap:
- Make a list of your to-dos.
- Organize them into needs and wants.
- Create space to rejuvenate and innovate.
- Identify tasks that zap your energy.
- Delegate to free up more time and energy to prioritize better.
