Keeping Your Cool When Things Get Hot
How good are you at keeping your cool when things get hot?
If you’re a parent, grandparent, or caregiver, and especially a mompreneur, you know that tempers can rise quickly, especially when juggling kids, work, and life in general.
Being a mompreneur myself with three wonderful children: a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 6-year-old, I absolutely understand how challenging it can be to keep calm when everything around you seems to be in chaos.
Understanding the Heat of the Moment
Let’s be real: life gets overwhelming sometimes, especially when the demands of parenting, business, and household tasks collide. Have you ever bottled up your emotions only to eventually explode at the smallest thing? I used to do that, and it was like dropping Mentos into a bottle of cola—everything built up until it blew! It took me some time (and three kids) to realize that bottling things up wasn’t healthy, either for me or my family.
We often feel like our own emotions and stresses aren’t as important as everything else we’re juggling, but if we don’t acknowledge them, they come out in unexpected ways. Keeping your cool is not about suppressing your feelings, but rather learning how to manage them and respond rather than react.
3 Tips for Keeping Cool Under Pressure
Here are three tips I’ve developed over the years that have helped me manage those hot-headed moments:
-
Self-Awareness
This is the foundation of staying calm. By being aware of what irritates you, you can take steps to manage those triggers before you lose your cool. For me, I get frustrated when I’m interrupted while working. As a mom working from home, this happens a lot. But I’ve realized that my kids just want my attention, and it’s normal for them to need me.
To manage this, I’ve started scheduling specific times during the day to focus on them. For example, I know that during my youngest’s nap time, I can help my older two with schoolwork or have a little one-on-one time. It’s important to recognize what sets you off and find solutions before it gets overwhelming.
-
Setting Expectations
This is a big one, both for yourself and your kids. My children know that if I’m working on client tasks, they need to wait until I’m done before asking for something that’s not urgent. However, they also know that I’ll give them my full attention as soon as I can. By setting these boundaries and explaining them clearly, I’m able to stay more composed, and they feel respected and heard.
-
Taking Breaks
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget to take breaks. But stepping away, even for a few minutes, can help reset your mind and body. Whether it’s taking a deep breath, going outside for fresh air, or indulging in a quick, calming activity, breaks are crucial for maintaining your cool in the long run. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to step back, regroup, and return when you’re ready.
Final Thoughts
None of us are perfect, and we all lose our cool sometimes—that’s just part of being human! The goal is to recognize the moments when we’re feeling overheated and learn from them. When we are aware of our triggers and take proactive steps to manage them, we can navigate the challenges of parenting with more grace and patience.
Remember, it’s okay to take time for yourself and set boundaries. You’re a superhero, but even superheroes need a break!
