Using Your Voice – Inside and Out
Today, I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind a lot lately: using your voice – inside and out.
Like many of you, I juggle running my business with parenting and homeschooling my kids. It’s a busy life, but it’s ours, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
So, when I say using your voice, that can mean your literal voice—the one you’re speaking with—but also that inner voice we often ignore. Let’s dive into both and see how they play a role in how we show up as parents, entrepreneurs, and just people in general.
Owning Your Voice
We’re constantly surrounded by judgment and unsolicited advice. It comes from family, friends, strangers—sometimes even ourselves. As mompreneurs, we need to confidently use our voice to say, “Thanks, but no thanks,” when it comes to how we parent and sometimes how we run our business. Your decisions are valid, and it’s okay to stand firm in them.
But using your voice isn’t just about standing up to others; it’s also about using it to encourage yourself. It’s so important to listen to your internal dialogue and make sure it’s empowering rather than filled with doubt. You are the heart of your family and business, and if your inner voice is always negative or questioning, that energy can spill out into how you speak and act.
The Power of Your Inner Voice
We’ve all been taught that once we become parents, our children become the priority—and rightly so! But we often forget to honor our own inner needs. If something feels off, if you’re not feeling fulfilled, it’s time to listen to that inner voice. Why? Because your happiness matters, and when you take steps to improve it, everyone benefits. Your kids (and clients) learn from watching you honor your own needs and voice, and in turn, they learn to honor their own.
Start small. If there’s a dream you’ve been putting off, begin to give it life by speaking it out loud. Don’t bury your desires in self-doubt. We’ve all been guilty of thinking, “I’d love to do this, but…,” followed by all the reasons it won’t work. Start reframing that internal dialogue. Instead of focusing on why something won’t happen, start looking at the steps that will get you there.
Infusing Your Voice with Meaning
One of my favorite quotes comes from the incredible Maya Angelou: “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.”
Think about how your internal voice shapes your external voice. If you’re filled with doubt, that uncertainty will creep into your speech, your actions, and how you present yourself to the world. On the flip side, when you speak confidently and with intention, people can feel that. You give life to your thoughts and goals.
For example, let’s say you want to take a family trip next year. Speak that goal out loud with confidence: “We are going to take a trip next year!” Infuse it with meaning, make it real, and take the steps necessary to make it happen. This applies to everything—from parenting decisions to personal and business goals. Use your voice to give your ideas power.
Wrapping Up with Thoughtfulness
As we wrap up, I want to leave you with one final thought: Don’t let your inner voice go unheard. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of life, but take time for reflection and listen to what your heart is telling you. Then, use your external voice to bring those thoughts to life.
With that to ponder, take a moment to check in with yourself and use your voice in a way that aligns with your goals, your values, and your happiness.
