A GREAT lesson in choice and resilience.

My son and I went on a Washington DC trip offered through his school to all 8th graders.
I’ve never been, he didn’t want to go alone, so we figured it would be a win-win.
We were supposed to arrive and start touring on a Thursday afternoon. We didn’t arrive until 1am Saturday morning (but our bags were in DC on Thursday).
Dealing with one hiccup after another with 35 children in tow made it even more challenging. Questions, attitudes, disappointment… all the feels, personalities, and such.
Often I found myself repeating “You don’t get to choose your situation, you only get to choose your reaction/attitude.”

We essentially attempted to fit in 2.5 days of touring into 1 day.

After holding out a liiitttttllleeee bit of hope that maybe we’d receive some sort of reimbursement for what we missed, we were informed it may not be what we might expect so brace for that.
While I’m still processing some emotions from the experience, I am eternally grateful that I was there to help through it, share some positive moments with my teenager, eventually see some incredible sights, and we made the most of it.
I could sit for days with what ifs or be upset or angry about how it turned out, but that won’t help anyone.
In the end, we rallied, and saw many sights in DC (albeit briefly). If you asked me if I would do it again, my answer would be yes because that 1:1 time with my teenager was totally worth the lack of sleep, stressful moments, and memories made together.

Trust me, I vent when needed, acknowledge the feelings and move through so I can release.

But I CHOOSE not to remain down. I CHOOSE to find the good and let the rest go (sometimes that takes a bit of time, but onward and upward!).
