Ambition Doesn’t Always Look Like Hustle

Ambition Doesn’t Always Look Like Hustle

Ambition Doesn’t Always Look Like Hustle. Sometimes It Looks Like a Plan.

Ambition doesn’t always look like hustle.

Sometimes, it looks like a plan.

I have a goal:

I want to launch group preschool music classes by September.

Exciting? YES.

But saying, “I want to do that,” doesn’t magically make it happen.

There are steps between having the idea and actually bringing it to life.

For me, that meant looking at the spaces we already had and realizing that three rooms needed to be reorganized and revamped.

Which meant…

Budgeting.

Figuring out what we actually needed.

Selling things we weren’t using anymore.

  • Rearranging.
  • Painting.
  • Building.
  • Cleaning.
  • Making decisions.

And, quite frankly, putting in a LOT of effort.

Because that’s the part of ambition we don’t always talk about.

We talk about the dream.
We talk about the excitement.

We talk about what it will look like when everything comes together.

But we don’t always talk about all the little pieces that have to happen along the way.

The reality is, big goals are usually built through a whole lot of ordinary work.

You dream.

Then you break the dream into pieces.

Then you work those pieces.

And you keep moving.

A Big Goal Becomes Manageable When You Break It Down

When I first started thinking about launching preschool music classes, it was easy to look at the goal as one giant thing.

Launch the classes.

But that’s not really one task.

It’s dozens of smaller tasks working together.

I need the right space.

The space needs to be functional.

We need the right materials.
We need to figure out what we already have and what we actually need.

There are things to sell.

  • Things to move.
  • Things to paint.
  • Things to build.
  • Things to clean.
  • Things to organize.

And decisions to make along the way.

Once I started breaking it down, the goal felt much more manageable.

And honestly, I think that’s true for so many of the things we want to accomplish.

Whether you’re building a business, starting a new project, changing something in your home, or working toward a personal goal, you don’t have to tackle the entire thing at once.

You just need to figure out what comes next.

Give Yourself Some Wiggle Room

Of course, having a plan doesn’t mean everything will go according to plan.

Because… life.

Someone gets sick.
Something takes longer than expected.

A surprise expense pops up.

Your schedule gets thrown completely off.

The dog eats something weird.

Because of course.

Sometimes the timeline shifts.

And that’s okay.

A changed timeline doesn’t automatically mean a changed goal.

Sometimes you simply need to adjust the plan.

That’s the rhythm:

  • Dream.
  • Plan.
  • Execute.
  • Adjust.
  • Keep going.

I think we can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out.

We think we need to know exactly what we’ll be doing six months from now.
We think we need the perfect plan before we begin.

But you don’t have to know every single step six months from now.

You just need to know enough about where you’re going to figure out what needs to happen next.

Then you do that.

And after that?

You figure out the next piece.

The Work Is Part of the Ambition

Sometimes ambition looks exciting.
Sometimes it looks like finally launching the thing you’ve been dreaming about.

But sometimes ambition looks like sitting on the floor surrounded by boxes because you’re reorganizing a room.

  • Sometimes it looks like making a budget.
  • Sometimes it looks like selling furniture.
  • Sometimes it looks like painting.
  • Sometimes it looks like cleaning up a mess you didn’t particularly want to deal with.

And sometimes it looks like doing the same small task you’ve been putting off because you know it’s necessary for the bigger picture.

That work still counts.

In fact, that’s the work that turns the dream into something real.

So if you’re in the middle of building something right now and it doesn’t feel particularly glamorous, don’t discount it.

  • The small pieces matter.
  • The planning matters.
  • The adjusting matters.
  • The ordinary work matters.

You’re not necessarily behind just because you’re still working on the pieces.  You’re building.

And building takes time.

You Don’t Need the Whole Map

Maybe you have a big goal sitting in the back of your mind right now.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about starting something.

  • Changing something.
  • Growing something.
  • Creating something.

And maybe the whole thing feels a little overwhelming.

Start smaller.

Don’t ask yourself, “How am I going to make this entire thing happen?”

Ask:

“What is the next piece?”

Then work on that.

  • You don’t have to know every single step.
  • You don’t have to have every detail figured out.
  • You don’t have to hustle your way through every season.
  • You can dream.
  • You can make a plan.
  • You can take the next step.
  • You can adjust when life happens.

And you can keep going.

That’s ambition, too.

So…

What’s the thing you’re building right now?

And more importantly, what’s the next piece you need to work?
